Real ID Know Before You Go
What is the REAL ID?
The REAL ID is a more secure form of identification than a standard driver's license. Starting May 7, 2025, it will be required to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
Why It Matters
The REAL ID is more than a driver’s license—it’s your ticket to seamless travel and secure access. Without it, you could face major inconveniences and delays, especially if you plan to fly within the U.S. or visit government buildings.
Think about it...what if there's an emergency and you need to get on the first flight out, but you don't have a REAL ID? It's gonna be a REAL problem!
So yes it's a pain, but I'd rather you be inconvenienced now while there's not an emergency vs when it is.
What Happens If You Don’t Get a REAL ID?
If you don’t have a REAL ID by the deadline:
You won’t be able to board domestic flights using just your driver’s license or state ID.
You’ll be denied access to federal facilities, such as military bases or nuclear plants.
You’ll need an alternative TSA-approved ID like a valid passport or military ID for domestic air travel.
How to Get Your REAL ID
ALWAYS double check with your state’s DMV site for the exact list of documents and appointment guidelines because things change, but for now when you're headed to the DMV, make sure you bring:
1. Proof of Identity (ONE of the following):
Valid U.S. passport or passport card
Certified U.S. birth certificate
Permanent Resident Card or other approved document
2. Proof of Social Security Number (ONE of the following):
Social Security card
W-2 form
Paystub with full SSN
3. Two Proofs of Residency (TWO of the following):
Utility bill (dated within 90 days)
Rental lease agreement
Mortgage statement
Bank or credit card statement
Insurance policy
4. Name Change Documents (if applicable):
Marriage certificate
Divorce decree
Court order
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
With the deadline quickly approaching, lines at the DMV may get longer and appointment availability could shrink. Start the process now to avoid the last-minute rush.
And while you're at it, go ahead and renew that passport too 😎
